Advice for Householders during cold weather

In 2010, the UK saw one of the harshest winters on record. With another cold winter expected, simple advance preparation is vitally important. With this in mind, here are our key tips for you to share with your customers on protecting their homes this winter.

The importance of a pre-winter check up

  • check that water pipes in loft spaces and exposed areas are fully lagged
  • know the location of your stopcock
  • check for blocked gutters

During a cold snap

  • open the attic door or trap hatch during cold spells to let heat into the loft
  • consider changing your central heating thermostat from a timer to 24-hour until the cold snap ends
  • test taps for flow and if you find a frozen pipe act quickly to engage the services of a plumber before the thaw

If leaving a property unoccupied (such as a holiday home)

  • leave the heating on low
  • then ask someone to check regularly and act on it if a burst pipe is discovered
  • ensure the heating system is drained if unoccupied for a significant amount of time

In addition look out for damp patches on the ceiling or wall during the time snow starts to thaw and inspect isolated areas that are not so well insulated.
